Jinashikan are throwbacks an early style of shakuhachi in which the interior bore of the instrument is bamboo only, left as natural as possible while still working the resonance points in order to have the instrument play at a very high level. The tone of shakuhachi made in this manner are somewhat darker in timbre and more rustic than the brighter, more refined precision bore flutes. If made properly, these instruments exhibit a very open and remarkably resonant envelope of sound. Jinashi shakuhachi are completely hand-crafted and very difficult to produce. In Japan, this style is made by only a few select makers. Many players prefer the aesthetic of the more natural jinashikan because they have a unique neiro (tone color) some feel reflects the true spirit of bamboo and aesthetic of honkyoku. Jinashi shakuhachi are made from uncut pieces of madaké and tuned to the bamboo itself rather than Western standards of pitch. As a result, they are strictly solo instruments most appropriate for playing koten honkyoku, the "original" ancient Zen music for shakuhachi. OPTIONAL BINDING iis available for Jinashi Shakuhachi.
