During the Edo period, Hirosaki City, located in Aomori Prefecture, used to be a castle town of Tsugaru-Han. This town was a center for Shakuhachi "Koten" (old) Honkyoku of the Kinpu Ryu. "Azuma No Kyoku" was a representative piece of the Nezasa-Ha (Nezasa-Sect: of which the Kinpu Ryu is a sub-group). Later, Yoshida Iccho re-arranged this piece and adopted it as a Kinko Ryu Honkyoku. It is noted for its beautiful flowing melody. John performs this piece on his album Zen Shakuhachi Duets. |
