Lew Paxton Price traces the evolution of the tribal North American Indian flute from a variety of perspectives: historical, sociological and structural taking into account how each of these factors has influenced the design of the instrument. Native flutes are divided into eleven basic types which are analyzed in terms of their construction and dynamics.
